Detailed account of the liposuction experience in Korea

Are you considering traveling to Korea for liposuction or any other cosmetic surgery? Are you curious if the prices are really cheaper? Or if the Korean doctors and surgeons are really THAT good?

Well, the answer depends. I can personally attest that procedures like LASIK are definitely worth traveling to Korea for. While I haven't undergone rhinoplasty myself, I have friends who highly recommend the doctors here for that procedure. However, I understand that you're specifically interested in liposuction. Don't worry, I've done all the research for you and I'm here to share my experience from start to finish.

My Background with Weight Loss

liposuction in korea

I am a bi-racial Asian/White woman who had a successful career as a collegiate athlete and bikini model in my early 20s. However, after college, I struggled with maintaining my weight. Despite my love for exercise, life sometimes got in the way. As a result, my weight fluctuated over the past 7+ years, causing frustration, grief, and body image issues. In my quest to find a long-term solution, I researched different weight loss methods.

Several years ago, when I was closer to my goal weight, I had my first consultation for CoolSculpting in Los Angeles. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that freezes fat, and it worked well for me since I was close to my target weight. However, I later realized that it wasn't enough to address my goals, especially as I had gained more weight. After extensive research and consideration, I ultimately decided to pursue liposuction. I viewed it as a springboard to achieving the body I desired, with particular emphasis on sculpting an hourglass figure.

Before making my decision, I sought out multiple clinics in Korea and obtained quotes from around 10-12 different facilities. In order to navigate the consultation process effectively, I highly recommend having a native speaker of your chosen language accompany you. If you don't have someone available, services like Shin Medical offer English-speaking translators and expertise in patient consultation in Seoul, Korea. Based on my experience, I found that having a non-native translator led to confusion, frustration, and doubts.

*All prices and quotes mentioned are for full abdomen, flanks/love handles, and bra-line/waistline, as I emphasized my desire for a defined waistline (hourglass figure) during all consultations.

**Pro-tip: Many Korean clinics initially provide inflated pricing, but they are often willing to negotiate and offer discounts during the consultation if you inform them of other quotes you have received. This tactic helps you determine the actual price or a closer estimate before making a final decision.

Liposuction Consultations

Below, I will provide an overview of the various plastic surgery clinics in Seoul, South Korea, where I had consultations specifically for liposuction.

1. Lydian Plastic Surgery Clinic

Without a doubt, my experience at Lydian Plastic Surgery Clinic was the best consultation I had! Dr. An, the surgeon at Lydian, was the first doctor I consulted with for liposuction in Seoul. Initially, his straightforward and no-nonsense approach made me uneasy. However, after going through several other consultations filled with unnecessary information, I began to appreciate his honesty. Although I didn't immediately decide on Lydian as my chosen clinic at that time, there were several aspects that stood out to me:
  • Dr. An is the sole surgeon at the clinic, which means he personally handles both the consultation and the surgery. This level of involvement may not be common at many other clinics.
  • He is fluent in English, so there are no language barriers when communicating your desires and concerns. However, his assistant may not be fluent, which can cause some confusion during pricing discussions.
  • He doesn't beat around the bush or provide inflated pricing before offering discounts. His straightforward approach helped me make a more informed decision.
  • Dr. An specializes in liposuction and 5D liposculpture. He also works closely with patients to create a plan that ensures long-term preservation of the Brazilian butt lift (BBL) results, even after 10 years.
  • I particularly loved the clinic's ambiance and professionalism. Everything and everyone exuded a sense of confidence and expertise. This made me feel assured that I would receive excellent results.

2. The View

Next on my list of favorite clinics is The View. This plastic surgery clinic offers a wide range of procedures and is well-known for their breast lift/augmentation. I actually had a consultation for breast lift/augmentation in addition to liposuction. However, at a cost of approximately 12M won (for liposuction alone), it exceeded my budget, prompting me to explore other options. Nevertheless, I had some wonderful experiences at The View, which I believe are worth highlighting:
  • They specialize in a variety of procedures, making them a great choice if you're considering multiple treatments like breast lift/augmentation/reduction, in addition to liposuction. Their expertise in breast augmentations is well-regarded.
  • One of the standout aspects of The View was their excellent translator, Jasmine. As a Korean-American fluent in English, she made communication effortless and ensured that all my questions were addressed satisfactorily. She went above and beyond to work with me and understand my needs.

3. 365mc

In the end, I chose 365mc as my preferred clinic due to their exceptional value for money. They specialize in weight loss treatments, which naturally includes a significant number of liposuction procedures. In fact, they perform some of the highest numbers of liposuction surgeries in Seoul. Additionally, they offer other weight management procedures such as LAMS, a weight loss injectable for individuals who are further from their goal weight.

Here are some advantages of choosing 365mc:
  • Due to their focus on weight loss, the clinic provides a comprehensive consultation that includes guidance from a nutritionist. This post-operative care ensures that patients can maintain their long-term goals effectively.
  • All post-operative massages and treatments are included in the price. This eliminates the need to book and pay for additional services separately.
  • Given their extensive experience in performing liposuction, they have numerous before and after photos available for review. Moreover, their pricing is more affordable compared to many other clinics. The initial quote I received was approximately 7.5M won, with the final price being approximately 9M won.

Liposuction Experience

In the following section, I will provide an overview of my personal experience with liposuction in Korea, covering everything from preparation to recovery.

1. Preparation and Pre-Surgery

Once I had made the decision to undergo liposuction, I had to focus on thorough preparation. It is essential to have everything you need before the day of surgery, as it typically takes 4-6 weeks to start seeing results from liposuction. Here are the items you should gather in advance:
  • 2 or more sets of compression garments or Fajas: These garments will become an integral part of your life post-surgery. You will need to wear them constantly, with the exception of showering. If desired, it is advisable to purchase at least 2 sets or even a full-body compression garment.
  • Foam boards: Look for a set that includes boards for the front, lower back/lumbar support, and flanks. These boards are crucial for maximizing compression in the early weeks of recovery.
  • Rolling pin or foam roller: If you have had fat removed from your back, these items will facilitate lymphatic massages in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Waterproof and regular band-aids: Waterproof band-aids are necessary for showering 72 hours after surgery. Additionally, they should be used to disinfect and protect the stitches until they are removed. Since I had 11 incision points, I required a significant number of band-aids.
  • Painkillers: It is important to consult your doctor regarding suitable painkillers, as there may be restrictions on which medications you can take.
  • Pillows: Having extra pillows or a firm one will provide support and elevation while sleeping, aiding in faster recovery.
  • T-shirt dresses or loose non-elastic clothing: Although many sources recommend sweatpants, it is important to avoid elastic bands for several months (the duration varies depending on the doctor's instructions). Elastic bands may cause deformities in the newly sculpted body. Instead, opt for comfortable and loose recovery clothing to wear on top of your compression garments.
  • In addition to these items, I watched video tutorials on performing lymphatic massages at home to familiarize myself with the techniques and prepare for the discomfort I would experience.
Here are a few other pre-surgery considerations:
  • Avoid consuming alcohol or smoking for at least one week prior to surgery, as these substances can interfere with anesthesia.
  • Stop taking any non-prescription medications a month before surgery, unless otherwise advised by your doctor. Make sure to consult your doctor regarding any prescribed medications.
  • Fast for 8 hours before the surgery.

2. Day of Surgery

On the day of my scheduled liposuction surgery, I arrived at the clinic fully prepared. A translator was assigned to assist me throughout the process until I entered the operating room. After changing into a surgical gown, I handed my underwear and socks to a nurse who would help me put them back on after the procedure. I then met with each surgeon who would operate on me - one for my arms and another for my mid-section.

The surgeon handling my arms was very straightforward and set clear expectations. She informed me about the areas she would target and the amount of fat she planned to remove. Additionally, she discussed what she believed was my ideal weight. While it was close to my own goal weight, I expressed a desire to gain more muscle. She assured me that achieving my desired level of muscle would still align with an acceptable goal weight. Following the discussion, the surgeon marked the areas to be treated, and we proceeded with the next stage - the consultation for my mid-section.

During the consultation for my mid-section, the surgeon and I discussed our desired outcomes and preferences in detail. I reiterated my emphasis on achieving an attractive waistline. To my surprise, the surgeon informed me that my desired treatment area - the bra-line/waistline - was not included in the original package. As someone who is top-heavy, I decided to include that area at an additional cost, as I believed it would provide better overall body balance. Once the payment was made, the surgeon marked my body, signaling the completion of the pre-surgery preparations.

Accompanied by the nurse, translator, and anesthesiologist, I was led to the surgery room. Since my arms were one of the targeted areas, an IV was inserted into my foot. I was then washed with iodine, although I hadn't anticipated its distinct odor. Once I was comfortably on the operating table, the anesthesia took effect, enveloping me in a deep slumber. As a first-time experience, it felt like a gentle descent into sleep, bringing an end to my awareness.

When I regained consciousness, I felt groggy and as if I had been hit by a train, reminiscent of the worst hangover I had experienced in my 30s. I found myself in the assigned recovery room, wearing the post-surgery compression garments.

The recovery nurses advised me to take my time and notify them when I felt ready for a light meal. Once I indicated my readiness, I pressed the button on my bed, and I was served rice porridge. Subsequently, one of the nurses informed me that I would need to use the restroom in 5 minutes. Initially, I resisted, as I didn't feel the need to urinate. However, the nurse used her translating device to explain the importance of urinating to fully wake up from the anesthesia. She handed me a water bottle, which I promptly drank, and she assisted me as we walked to the restroom. I was grateful for her presence, as I would not have been able to reapply my compression garment without her assistance. Shortly after, I took a taxi home.

3. First Week of Recovery

As of writing this blog, a week has passed since my liposuction surgery. It is crucial to follow post-operative instructions meticulously in order to avoid complications and obtain optimal results. Every day, I engage in a minimum of 2 hours of walking. My meals consist primarily of lean proteins, vegetables, and rice, with minimal bread consumption. I wear my compression garments continuously and take short showers. I returned to my daily work routine the day after the surgery.

During the initial 4-5 days of recovery, my body experienced swelling and bruising. As a result, I temporarily gained weight and weighed more than I did before the surgery. The compression garments directed the swelling to non-surgical areas, resulting in significant swelling in my genital area, feet, and hands. The extent of bruising reached down my hands and extended to my knees. By the 5th day, the swelling began to subside, and by the 8th day, I could sit normally on a toilet seat. Although there is still widespread bruising, it has started to turn yellow, indicating healing is underway.

4. Can I See Results?

After 8 days, I have lost approximately 3kg (5lbs) compared to my pre-surgery weight. Additionally, I have noticed a reduction of around an inch (and a centimeter and a half) in the targeted areas. The change in my arms is particularly evident; I am incredibly pleased with the new shape and contour. As for my abdomen, the final verdict is still pending. Although the swelling is subsiding, my stomach remains firm and lumpy, which is a normal part of the recovery process. Rest assured, you can follow my journey on Instagram (@thetadaaah), where I document my food diary and provide regular updates. Here on this platform, I will continue to share my progress and experiences too!
