When a Fire Starts to Burn

The Gyeongnidan neighborhood, situated near the ever-popular Itaewon Road, has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity over the past year. Recently established restaurants have become beloved fixtures, cultivating an atmosphere that is welcoming and inclusive to both foreign visitors and locals alike.

On one street, tantalizing delights such as cupcakes, cocktails, and invigorating caffeine can all be found within reach. Amidst this burgeoning scene, however, one establishment distinguishes itself by offering a more intimate and exclusive experience. Aged whisky, Cuban cigars, and the captivating sounds of jazz standards are just a few of the elements that set BURN in Hal apart from its neighboring businesses.

Hal Husrevoglu, Owner BURN in Hal

Dressed impeccably with a silk scarf draped over his shoulders and a fedora tilted on his head, Hal Husrevoglu has been the proud owner and operator of BURN since its inception in September of 2011.

The interior is adorned with tasteful artwork, comfortable leather chairs and sofas, and emanates a relaxed atmosphere. Hal describes the decor as "New Edwardian", a style that exudes sophistication and elegance. The bartenders willingly pour top-tier spirits and are always on hand to offer expert recommendations for cigars, ensuring even the most novice of smokers feels at ease.

In recent times, BURN has garnered recognition as one of the finest bars in Korea, as heralded by reputable publications such as Marie Claire, Esquire, and Bar & Dining magazines. However, this widespread acclaim did not come easily.

"I encountered numerous challenges as a foreigner,” explains the Turkish expatriate. “I faced financial difficulties, ultimately having to sell my car and enduring unscrupulous behavior from contractors. It required tremendous effort to establish all of this."

Acknowledging the lack of progress and financial stability in its early stages, Hal made the necessary adjustments to ensure the seamless operation of the establishment.

“Initially, my friends and I envisioned creating an establishment where people could indulge in affordable luxuries,” he recalls. “Yet, I soon realized the necessity of imposing extra taxes, implementing measures to maintain clean air and effective bar ventilation. It became evident that the initial concept was not sustainable. To ensure the longevity of this place, I had to prohibit external food and cigars and prioritize membership.”

The benefits of membership extend to include priority seating, discounts, exclusive offers on select cigars and spirits, as well as exemption from live performance cover charges. Over time, this membership base has grown to encompass a diverse and eclectic array of smokers and imbibers from all walks of life.

“We welcome individuals from almost every profession on any given evening,” Hal states with pride. “You might find yourself mingling with a pilot, a poet, a professor, or perhaps even a purveyor of various commodities. On rare occasions, you may even encounter a priest seeking solace among kindred spirits.”

The changes implemented throughout the years have resoundingly contributed to the bar's great success and loyal clientele. Yet, according to Hal, the most significant transformation is found in the music—a passion deeply rooted in his Turkish upbringing.

“In my hometown, I recall seeing sophisticated, elegantly attired men leisurely stroll the streets, savoring cigars and congregating in venues resounding with melodic jazz and grandiose big band music,” Hal reminisces. “Now, you can walk through my door on most any given night and be enchanted by live musicians.”

Live music has become an integral part of Burn's ambiance, showcasing talents frequently seen at the most prestigious hotels in Seoul. Accomplished jazz vocalists and musicians mesmerize patrons, although Hal acknowledges that not everyone seeks this particular element in a bar. Nonetheless, BURN in HAL proudly stands as a fine addition to Seoul's flourishing jazz bar scene.

“My success stems from my deep affection for this bar,” he candidly reveals. “It resonates with me, and I am fortunate to share this sentiment with many others. Admittedly, not everyone who enjoys cigars and whiskey feels the same way about jazz, but such sentiments do not concern me.”

As the business moves forward, its next venture possesses an air of decadence. BURN will be hosting a Fresh Cigar Rolling Event on April 17th, featuring freshly rolled cigars complemented by meticulously aged spirits. Commencing at 7 pm, both members and non-members are invited to attend, although an RSVP is required to ensure an exclusive experience. Early attendees will have the opportunity to purchase freshly hand-rolled Davidoff cigars, as well as select rums and whiskeys ranging from 10 to 32 years of maturation.

“This event serves as an expression of appreciation for our members,” Hal adds. “I am constantly working to enhance the value of this establishment. By prioritizing our members, I believe this is an experience that will be cherished by all.”
