The turn of winter is upon us, prompting the need to wrap ourselves in our winter attire. However, mere insulation against the cold is insufficient to alleviate the winter blues. But fret not; the street merchants of Seoul are preparing to uplift your spirits with some extraordinary winter delights.
Hoppang– Resembling a pristine snowball, this snack made of flour dough and filled with sweet red bean paste is a delectable savory treat. Nowadays, a variety of fillings such as vegetables, meat, curry, and more can be found.
Baked Sweet Potatoes– Winter is the ideal season to savor delicious sweet potatoes; somehow, their flavor transforms entirely when cooked in large iron barrels. The flesh becomes tender and moist while the skin turns crispy and crunchy. Presented in a paper bag containing three or four sweet potatoes, these yellow delights pair wonderfully with freshly prepared Kimchi.
Gukhwappang– These flower-shaped sweet snacks, made from pancake batter and filled with red bean paste, serve as the perfect winter nibbles.
Garaetteok– This elongated white rice cake, shaped like a cylinder, has been a favorite among locals for centuries. It is the very same rice cake used in Tteokbokki and Tteokguk. It is comparable to the Korean equivalent of roasting marshmallows over an open flame. For an extra touch of sweetness, dip it in Jucheon (grain syrup) or honey.
