Comments that exude an air of nonchalance, intriguing facts, and fashionable pictures

Allow us to extend a warm welcome to Kimchi Town, also known as Christian Risom Skaanning, a Danish individual who has made the wise decision to spend a semester in Seoul! Over the next few months, he will be sharing his experiences through a series of weekly articles, delving into various topics such as captivating comments, fascinating trivia, and artistic snapshots, offering us an authentic glimpse into his adventures in this bustling city. All of his content will also be published on his blog, Kimchi Town, so be sure to check it out!

Below, we have gathered a selection of snapshots from his blog. The accompanying text is provided by My Guide Seoul, and all of the pictures are courtesy of Kimchi Town. Join us on this visual journey through a hipster's (student's) life in Seoul, and stay tuned for more local updates from Kimchi Town...

Kimchi Town

Acquire a T-Money card, as it covers all forms of public transportation within and around the city. It is user-friendly, affordable, and an absolute necessity for navigating the subway system. They can be obtained at subway stations and convenience stores.

T-Money love

Discover a serene spot near your campus to relax and unwind. If you exude an air of disinterest in typical academic pursuits, you may find solace here at Chung Ang University; alternatively, if you prefer to venture beyond the confines of campus, the city of Seoul offers a myriad of charming cafes. Prepare to be captivated - Seoul is cafe-crazed!

Too cool for school

If your taste buds have grown weary of the monotonous fare served at the campus cafeteria - consisting primarily of soup, plain rice, and kimchi - then we recommend indulging in Japche. This delectable dish is crafted from sweet potato glass noodles, accompanied by a medley of vegetables and sesame oil.

Soup, White Rice and Kimchi or....?!

When visiting Seoul, it is customary to assimilate with the locals and embark on a leisurely stroll along the renowned Cheonggye Stream. This picturesque location serves as a popular spot for couples embarking on their first date, families seeking quality time, and friends or colleagues yearning for tranquility. We suggest visiting during the nighttime to witness the captivating laser show, an experience reminiscent of true hipster style.

Do as the locals do...

As a student, every evening presents an opportunity to revel in the nightlife. However, where should one go and what events are transpiring in Seoul?

Rest assured, you will discover an extraordinary nightlife scene right at your fingertips in Seoul. If not, simply explore the vicinity of your location. Ensure that you are dressed appropriately and prepared to splurge at the bar - for it is there that the ladies will come seeking your company. Embrace the hipster Gangnam Style!

Look right down your Alley..

Although the club may have closed its doors, and you find yourself wide awake, fear not - Seoul offers an abundance of options for evening entertainment. However, if all else fails, there is always karaoke! Sing your heart out to forgotten songs that were once beloved... and if you are fortunate, you might even locate the specific track you seek, regardless of the seemingly perplexing remote control.

Forgotten songs?

After indulging in beer and soju, as well as being serenaded by a collection of nostalgic melodies intertwined with sentimental Korean love songs you never knew existed, it is time for a morning repast. In Korean culture, it is customary to conclude the night, or rather, embark on the early morning, with a meal. We highly recommend immersing yourself in the delight of Korean barbecue, particularly the samgyeopsal (three-layered pork belly) cut, which Koreans thoroughly relish. Although, admittedly, it may not align with the conventional notion of breakfast following a night of revelry... but, as they say, "when in Rome"! Give it a try - you will surely crave it once more.

What's for breakfast?

One of the advantages of being a penniless (yet nevertheless hipster) student who sleeps late into the night is the ability to catch the first subway home, thereby saving expenses on a taxi ride (even though taxis in Seoul are reasonably priced!). Our gratitude extends to Line 4 for providing us with captivating vistas.
