How to Pursue The True 'Gangnam' Style

You will be astonished by the district's opulence and its high-end fashion.

Over the past few months, PSY's 'Gangnam Style' has become a global sensation on YouTube, amassing over 400 million views. PSY has now earned a Guinness World Record for the most liked YouTube video and has reached the second position on the Billboard chart.

For those who are unfamiliar with Korea, they might wonder: 'What is all this hype about Gangnam Style?' or 'What does 'Gangnam' mean and what is the significance of this song?' Well, 'Gangnam' literally translates to 'South of the River'. It is one of the most densely populated districts situated south of the Han River in Seoul, but it is widely recognized as the most affluent and influential district in the country. In Gangnam, the district's prosperity and upscale fashion will leave you awestruck. However, in PSY's music video, he presents himself as a middle-aged, struggling fashion enthusiast, deluding himself as the epitome of Gangnam style. In reality, though, he is merely an imitator, poorly mimicking a far superior class of style.

Intentionally, he repeats the phrase: "Oppan Gangnam Style," which means: "I am Gangnam Style." The use of the term 'oppa' is intriguing as it is an endearing expression that girls use to address older male friends or boyfriends. Alongside his pursuit of a Gangnam-style life, he also strives tirelessly to capture the attention of women.
